The Academy of Entertainment & Technology is home to the Design Technology Department of Santa Monica College, offering curriculum in a number of areas such as Animation, Game Development, Graphic Design, Interior Architectural Design, Post Production and Visual Effects.


It is the mission of the Academy of Entertainment & Technology to provide students with a comprehensive and well rounded education in rapidly evolving media fields.




Fall 2008 Semester begins Monday, August 25, 2008 and ends Tuesday, December 16, 2008
ET 64, Digital Effects    3 units

Transfer: CSU  Prerequisite: Entertainment Technology 24, (94).

This introductory course provides a basic overview of the tools available in Side Effects current Houdini software package for the creation of digital effects. Topics covered include modeling, particles, look development, shading, lighting and rendering. This course emphasizes the fundamental concepts of digital effects as well as an understanding of the software.

Spring 2009 Semester begins Tuesday, February 17th, 2009
ET 65, Digital Effects II    3 units

Transfer: CSU  Prerequisite: Entertainment Technology 64.

This course focuses on advanced methodologies for creating digital effects. Topics covered include advanced particle simulations, expressions and scripting techniques, dynamic simulations, rendering solutions, and effects compositing. This course emphasizes procedural workflows and the interdependency of various software tools to achieve efficient and flexible results. This course uses Side Effects Houdini.

About the instructor:
Rachael Campbell graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2006 and interned at Side Effects Software (Houdini) from February-August 2007. She has worked as a Houdini and CG Artist at Method Studios in Santa Monica since September 2007 on numerous commercials, including ones for Honda Pilot and Kia, "The Closer," and Gatorade's "League of Clutch"--Kevin Garnett, which aired repeatedly during the NBA Finals.
